Current research projects in the Department cover a vast range of science and engineering concerned with advancing the fundamental understanding, industrial efficiency, and environmental sustainability of processes and materials at the heart of modern society.

Carbon Capture and Storage - Cutting-edge research into reducing the planet's carbon footprint is taking place at the University, following the launch of the Centre for Innovation in Carbon Capture and Storage. Mercedes Maroto-Valer is looking at ways to deal with carbon dioxide emissions at places like power stations. Many of the solutions involve piping away the carbon dioxide for storage under the sea. But in this short clip she also explains a way to use it in construction.

Leading the way in Chemistry and Engineering - The interface between Chemistry and Chemical Engineering is highlighted as a crucial area for research innovation in several recent reports. Historically, chemistry and chemical engineering have been divided in UK universities. Driving Innovation in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering (DICE) is a joint initiative from chemists and engineers at Nottingham, which seizes the unique opportunity, to create a completely new research environment with the potential to catapult the UK to the forefront of this field.

Microwave Processing - Professor Sam Kingman is undertaking cutting edge research in the area of industrial microwave technologies, providing a development interface between industry and leading academics. Microwave technologies allow the creation of new market opportunities and lead to the development of sustainable energy efficient products, processes and services. The University is internationally leading in this field, evidenced by the award of significant research funding from global industry.

Bacteria and nanofilters; the future of clean water technology - Researchers in the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering are using tiny organisms with the very latest membrane filtration techniques to improve and refine water cleaning technology. The research is led by Prof Nidal Hilal in the Centre for Clean Water Technologies - a world-leading research centre developing advanced technologies in water treatment.
